War Child

I was introduced to the work of Emmanuel Jal (Sudanese rapper and author) through, of all things, a TED TALK!

Vodpod videos no longer available.

In the video, he tells his story of being conscripted as child soldier at the age of nine.  His narrative is compelling and worth a listen.  He ends the talk by performing his song “Emma” about the British Aid worker who “rescued” him.  The song might not be to everyone’s taste, but the message is powerful.

Emmanuel Jal also told his story and published it as a book: War Child.  I also read the book and was deeply moved by it.  My two youngest sons are 7 and 10, and my heart breaks to even imagine them in a situation like that.
