Librarians are surprised and excited at the sudden trickle, if there is such a thing as a sudden trickle, of positive press libraries and librarians have been getting in the last year or so, culminating recently in videos like
- “New Spice guy” for the Brigham Young University Libraries (Old Spice parody.)*
- “Old Spice guy” response video on words, books, libraries and pigeons.
Outcome for the BYU Library: over a million hits! Since when has a library gotten a million anything?
Also, last month Fox News Chicago gave libraries an unintentional plug when they floated the idea that public money should be spent on something other than libraries –and got a stern response from the Chicago Public Library commissioner, Mary Dempsey, not to mention lots of people who tend to root for the underdog leaping to our defense.
We’ve getting viral. At the University of Washington the librarians are going GaGa.
[Editor’s Comment: My favorite line from the New Spice video is “Did you know that 8 out of 5 dentists say that studying in the library is six bagillion times more effective than studying in the shower?” Now that’s funny.]
