Safety on the net is important. OnGuardOnline.gov wants help you make better choices for you and your family while using the Internet.
According to their site, “OnGuardOnline.gov provides practical tips from the federal government and the technology industry to help you be on guard against Internet fraud, secure your computer, and protect your personal information.” This site provides tools, games, videos covering the topics of security, theft, privacy and web-based scams. Two features to check out are:
- OnGuardOnline.gov’s Friend Finder Game: Kids have fun while they earn their spot by demonstrating they are “savvy when it comes to making friends online.”
- My personal favorite: “Net Cetera: Chatting With Kids About Being Online.” OnGuard Online gives adults practical tips to help kids navigate the online world.”
The name of the OnGuardOnline.gov video entitled “Phishy Home” says it all. It is one of three videos about phishing and drives the point home about who to trust (or not to trust) when giving out personal information such as credit card and Social Security numbers. It’s “reel” corny, but raises awareness nonetheless. Always listen to that little voice inside you when something seems a little fishy. (Sorry, couldn’t help that one!)
